A biggest part of life is seeking the truth about love. As English poet Alfred Lord Tennyson famously said “tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.” We all go through different stages, seeking a love that will last. Eastern Philosopher Osho broke down the three different types of love.
1. Erotic love
This is a romantic type of love. It is beyond the physical, but does contain mostly lustful and possessive energy. This love is self beneficial love. It happens when the woman or man is looking for some financial, sexual or social benefit. This love can progress to higher levels of love, but many times it does not go anywhere and it leaves both individuals hurt in the end.
2. Friendship love
This is the foundation for a successful relationship. There is less jealously because a deeper trust is embedded both the individuals. Like, erotic love it must develop into a higher level, which brings me to the last type of love...
3. Agape love
Agape means God-centered love and it can only be achieved through the highest level of consciousness. Most people go through their whole lives without knowing the greatest love there is. Erotic and friendship love is more psychological, but agape is spiritual.
When Alfred Lord Tennyson said “'tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all,” he was probably talking about erotic love. At least if someone hasn't tasted the other two it's better to have at least had some love in life, but agape transcends all of that and you become love.
